The Anti-Gay Lobby’s New Year’s Resolution

Jan 03 2007

Lobby New Year

Hey there, kiddos! I’m back from my little website holiday, and let me be the first—well, more likely the several dozen-th person to wish you a happy and prosperous new year!

And, of course, I come into the new year bearing some tremendously fascinating news from the anti-gay lobby! Our good friends at Focus on the Family Canada—in conjunction with the Institute for Canadian Values—in conjunction with the Canada Family Action Coalition—have formed an “informal coalition!”

Wow! Just think what new ideas they’ll come up with together! Do you think they have a name yet? If not, I’d like to suggest The Canadian Family Values Institute for Action Coalition Focusing. That, or The ‘I Rather Dislike Gays’ Club. Whichever communicates their objectives more effectively.

Anyway, their first goal is to lobby the government into ordering a royal commission on marriage and families. At least, that’s what they released to the press on New Year’s Day. (Sounds like someone had a wild new year’s eve!)

While the commission would ostensibly include everything from family tax policy to child care, a spokesperson for the coalition mentioned—in passing—that it could also “revive the gay marriage issue in Parliament.” But, I’m sure that’s really just a sideline for the whole movement. You know, if it comes up.

And if Harper doesn’t agree to this commission—the ol’ Family Focus Action Institute for Canadian Coalitions is prepared to do some pretty hefty damage. As spokesperson, Joseph Ben-Ami, threatened: “Don’t expect me to go out and vote Liberal. But I do have an alternative and that’s staying home.”

Oooooh!

Well, until Friday, folks!

Darrel Reid Gets Government Gig

Oct 04 2006

Chief of Staff, Darrel Reid

Conservative Environment Minister Rona Ambrose quietly appointed the president of a notorious anti-gay lobby group as her new Chief of Staff last week.

Darrel Reid, former head of Focus on the Family Canada, actively lobbied against equal marriage and the adding of sexual orientation to the list of minority groups protected from hate crimes in Canada. And now he has a spiffy new environment gig!

So, where does Darrel’s new-found love of the environment come from? My guess: There are no gay trees. Although, come to think of it… Don’t hermaphroditic organisms only mate with the same gender?

Pro-Family Group Distorts Research

Jun 21 2006

Wacky Pro-Family Spokeswoman

Troubling news, folks. A British Columbia researcher recently discovered that 38 percent of lesbian teens attempt suicide compared to only 8 percent of heterosexual girls. That’s 4 out of 10; a startlingly high figure.

Now, how do you suppose Melissa Fryrear of the crazily anti-gay lobbyist group Focus on the Family weighs in on this? Well… (drum roll) it looks like she’s placing the blame on… (eye roll) the gays! Observe:

Regrettably, [teen lesbians] think they have to embrace homosexuality because pro-gay advocates told them that they were born gay. And that is absolutely not true.

Uh, OK. So… the people trying to foster a more accepting society are responsible? Gee, I wonder what Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc—who actually did the research—has to say about all this?

Nothing in the brief results we presented or in our overall study could lead to such conclusions.

The research has been hijacked for somebody’s political purposes or ideological purposes and that’s worrisome. In fact, American studies have noted that gay teenagers are at the highest risk of suicide before they come out of the closet. After that, they do quite well unless they’re harassed.

So, there you go. The “pro-family” types were caught lying again. How shocking. Utterly offensive and such. Well, I’m off to make some orange pekoe tea before someone starts interpreting it as being totally pro-citrus, even though there are no oranges in it. Who wants?
