Anti-Gay Activist Loses Case To Sue Union
The excruciatingly slow rickshaw of justice has, at last, stated the obvious. Susan Comstock, who decided to sue her union over its support of same-sex marriage, has lost her case.
The poor dear brought her union to court last year, claiming that her religious beliefs were violated by the Public Service Alliance of Canada‘s support of the federal same-sex marriage bill. Of course, that claim assumed one’s religious rights include single-handedly deciding the financial spending of all organizations you belong to, which is just nutty. Unless you happen to be Phil Horgan, president of the Catholic Civil Rights League, and the man who represented Comstock:
I think [the ruling] is indicative of a problem Canadians will have in addressing what is becoming a somewhat oppressive environment. The reach of these decisions is only starting to be felt.
Ooh! A chilling warning of future cases.
Hey, does this mean I can sue Blockbuster Video for using part of my membership fee to stock copies of Runaway Bride? I can’t begin to describe how much that offends me.
Union To Teachers: You Gay?
Less than one year after the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union scolded the Halifax Regional School Board for asking teachers if they’re gay, the union is doing the exact same thing.
Now, before you all exclaim something like “Gee whiz, talk about the pot calling the kettle tacky and unfit to grace any self-respecting gay man’s kitchen!” this survey is different. As union president, Mary-Lou Donnelly, put it:
[The survey is] more to gather information on perceptions, on resources that are available in the schools, on what we can identify in our schools that help our educators or our students or that are lacking in our schools. It’s not about identification of individuals at all.
Well, I gotta admit, this is a far better approach than the Halifax School Board’s mandatory and personally-identifiable survey. That survey was an ill-advised attempt at appearing concerned for gay staff after being fined for an appalling, gay-related human rights violation. But, still, after that fiasco, what kind of responses are they expecting, precisely? “Yeah, I can be fired based on my sexual orientation and wrongfully investigated for child molestation, but hey—the coffee here is not too shabby!”

Union Supports Gays, Gets Sued
Now this is odd. An Ontario woman is suing her union, the Public Service Alliance of Canada, for supporting the federal same-sex marriage bill last year. Susan Comstock claims that by allocating some of her union dues to support social justice, her religious freedom was violated. The poor dear! Now she’s demanding that her union divert money to a charity of her choice (probably—but not necessarily—one that protects furry animals; it usually is).
As always, the anti-gay crazy is claiming not to be homophobic.
I am not homophobic. To me this was an instance where they had made a choice that gay rights were going to trump religious rights, and what’s more, they were doing it with my money.
I know how you feel, crazy woman. This one time, city council—using my tax dollars—decided to remove a dead tree on the street opposite my apartment window instead of fixing the pothole near the rear entrance. I was inconsolable! Do you think it’s too late to sue?
